Formative, Summative, and Adaptive testing

Each year, our customers administer millions of tests using TestVision. This can be both formative and summative. Progress tests and truly adaptive testing are also possible.

Formative, Summative testing

Tests with a formative function

Formative testing keeps you connected to the learner’s progress throughout the learning process. It provides insight into what they’ve already mastered, which topics need further attention, and whether they’re on track. A well-designed formative test delivers targeted feedback. That’s why we see each testing moment as a learning moment; a chance not only to test learning, but to learn from testing.

Tests with a summative function

Ultimately, any learning journey leads to one key question: has the student, learner, or employee acquired the knowledge and skills they need? A summative test provides clear insight into the achieved results. That’s valuable not just for the learner, but also for you. It tells you whether your investment in learning was worthwhile.

Truly Adaptive Testing with TestVision

TestVision is one of the first test platforms to offer large-scale, computer-adaptive testing in a proven and scalable way.

No more manually created question trees, but a large item bank with calibrated questions is used. Based on each response, the system automatically selects the next item. Every correct answer increases the difficulty of the next question.

This allows our customers to measure students’ knowledge progression throughout their entire studie. For each test and each learner, you get precise insights into what knowledge is in place and where further attention is needed. It’s a major step forward toward truly personalized learning.

Progress Testing

TestVision also supports progress testing, where all candidates, regardless of their current level of knowledge, receive the same set of questions.
The candidates are first divided into a certain group (a ‘measurement moment’) based on their knowledge level. Within one group, candidates have approximately the same level.

While scoring is consistent across all groups, the pass standard (cut-off score) can vary per group. This means that candidates with more knowledge (in a higher measurement moment) need to answer more questions correctly to pass.
